“Among Murderers and Madness” is a nearly 20-year journey; a winding road from the murder of a mother and her two children to the guilty plea of a man, Kevin Hailey, who many believed from the beginning had committed the crimes. Journalist Sonny Long followed the case since the day the bodies were found. He established a close relationship with the victims’ family and friends, befriended members of law enforcement, and remained in correspondence with Hailey’s mother even after she was convicted of murdering her husband. He has also corresponded with Hailey with the convicted murderer proclaiming his innocence despite the plea agreement.

It seems that it would be inappropriate to say that this was a wonderful read. I grew up in Atlanta, Tx. The murder of the Butts family is infamous here. Everyone has their theories, questions, and lack of answers. Having started this book, a friend and I were talking about it and the people involved and believed to be involved. It doesn't seem like a cold case around here. My brother went to school with Jessica, I grew up around the staff at Hanners (who were haunted by the horrific crime and scene), and we have all met (at one point or another) many of the people mentioned in Sonny Long's book. So reading this book, it was clear that Sonny knew the goings-on in our small misshapen town. He has the knowledge that "outsiders" just don't seem to get. We still have a crooked as all hell police department (although apd has happened upon a couple of good cops in recent years) tj hawley is still employed as a cop, and in a sick twist, he is in charge of the firearms courses ( he OPENED FIRE AT A CAR THAT WAS STEALING GAS!!!) anyhow, we all know the seediness of atlanta and blemishes on the facade presented for tourists, and it was nice to read a book by someone who gets it. This book was one that gripped you and held on to you. It captivated you on a hometown level. This man is writing about the most gruesome crime commited in any recent years in east tx. Over all- book was very well written, an interesting and informative read, and unbias even though he wrote that he believes in kevin's guilt. He kept hisself neutral and wrote the facts. Great job!! Our small backwards town has had many murders in recent years.. I could see a sequal about the other murders in this town, and would definately read it if Sonny put it to pen and paper!!Product details

This book shares what happened in the small town of Atlanta, TX where I live... I grew up living down the road from this family.
Book content okay, but was disappointed it was a small paper back considering the price I paid. I could have gone to my local bookstore and got a hardback for less than I paid for this. I feel cheated.
Everyone should read this book! It's truly a wonderful read about a true crime. My friends story of how they died!
The murders described in the book happened just a few blocks from my house and I knew (or know of) many of the characters personally. I enjoyed the book very much.
Great read about murders that happened in my town.
I admired Mr. Longs commitment and sacrifice he dedicated to trying to solve these murders. He did his home work and in my opinion gave as many facts mixed with some strong ideas of what may or could have happened. I would read the book again...it is on such a dark subject it is hard to say I enjoyed the book......there is so much pain and lose for so many people it is hard to bring the word enjoyed the read into it......It was informative and answered some questions I had wondered about. I would recommend the book!
I don't think we will.....but someone does. Someday I hope they will come forward...for those children. Jessica was in my Sunday school class and baptism day was shared with my daughter. Rest in peace sweetie ...You were loved
