This book CANNOT be read without reading the first book. I felt like I had picked a book at random and opened in the middle and started reading. I had NO idea who the people in the book where. At 140 pages this wasn't even a novella, it was really just a chapter in a book.

All Saints' Secrets Saints Mystery Series Book 2 edition by Nicole Loughan Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I bought this book because I really like mysteries & I have family that lives in Lafayette, Louisiana. I thought the locale would be a fun backdrop to the mystery. It was as well as being educational I had no idea that in the swamps the houses are practically built on the water everyone's porch is accessible by boat.
I bought the book about a year ago but with time passing I didn't remember much about the plot. This plot develops very slowly & refers back to the first book in the series very often. I hadn't read the first book as it didn't interest me as much as this one did however my suggestion for anyone who is thinking of reading this book is to read the first in the series so you won't be like me in the dark for many chapters. At one point I even wondered why I had bought the book because the mystery seemingly isn't the main focus. The main focus is the young woman Fanchon Deveroux, & her good friends Beau a guy she went to school with, Banyan a cop she dwelt with in the first book, & good friends Clem & Abolina. Their daughters Lynette & Josephine had died in the first book. I can't say I liked anyone but Banyan for the longest time & I think I only liked him because he is not much in the book till almost the end. Fanchon drinks like everyone does in Louisiana which is OK but I didn't like the way her morals sort of evaporated when drunk. Yes she is young & I have been also but would like to think I didn't act this way when was dating age. This author has minor plots that aren't very well told such as Josephine & Fanchon had moved to New York where Fanchon was trying to pursue a music career by playing piano. The author doesn't say what Josephine does in New York she does mention that the girls were tour guides in one of the many mansions in Louisiana. This would have been OK but the reference was that Josephine & Fanchon had made a lot of money & put most of it in savings. The author doesn't say how the money came to be.
Mostly this is all about Louisiana when you finally do get to the heart of the mystery it's good not overly complicated or complex. I'm not sure if I'll read the 3rd book in the series if it is similar to this one. I prefer more mystery than characterization you might also.
It wasn't bad, but it wasn't spectacular. I didn't realize at the time I downloaded this book that it was book two in a series. I'm guessing that because I didn't read the first book I missed out on quite a bit of this story's plot. I'm also guessing that maybe this book should have been included with the last since most of its contents are focused on Fanchon's recovery from the previous book's events.
This book is short and slow. Other than Fanchon's struggles to get around, not much happened in this book until around 80%. Even the love triangle was slow and kind of dull. I didn't dislike this book, but it just didn't entertain me.
Some reviewers say you don't have to read the first book, some say, not. Well, it took a bit to figure out the beginning of this story which I probably wouldn't have had to do if I'd read the first book. Another problem is some pretty bad grammar littered throughout which is more annoying to me than basic typos or some formatting problems. Then there is the heroine who, with broken bones and a badly beat up body can still manage to escape her perils and that is a pet peeve of mine. But the worst - spoiler alert - is a woman who was beaten regularly and severely throughout her childhood by her father, who instantly finds forgiveness and compassion for him when she learns that he beat the living daylights out of her regularly because if he didn't do it, the mother would have. That is about the stupidest thing I've ever heard or read even though I understand people, myself included, can do some stupid stuff. I've never bought "I'm doing this for your own good" or "this hurts me more than it hurts you" as an excuse for abuse, and the excuse offered in this story is more ridiculous than those. However, I struggled through to the end, which didn't take long since it was a very short book with not much depth, and unfortunately, I go no pleasant surprises in the ending. On a positive note, I did like some of the descriptions of rural Louisiana. What I felt in the end, is that this is an author with some talent because there were sections which I thought were very good. But the book, as a whole felt lazy, as if the author just wanted to get it done with and published. So, despite the few parts that I felt were pretty interesting, they were a very small part of this very small book, so it's unlikely that I will read any other book by this writer.
While this is the 2nd in what will hopefully be a series of books, I've only read this book and feel I caught up on the backstory without any problems.
This is a really good mystery/murder book set in Creole country. I am looking forward to another book that carries the younger character further into her future whilst keeping her Creole roots alive.
Overcoming murder attempts and family secrets, with a musical gift and a great, gritty personality... this character is a good one. I recommend this short read if you enjoy mysteries.
This book CANNOT be read without reading the first book. I felt like I had picked a book at random and opened in the middle and started reading. I had NO idea who the people in the book where. At 140 pages this wasn't even a novella, it was really just a chapter in a book.
